Education

Education is a vital basic human right enshrined in several international and national protocols, conventions and treaties and needs to be observed and exercised with utmost commitment. The efforts being made by the government of Somalia to ensure universal basic education are enormous, but a lot more still needs to be done to ensure good education for all in order to achieve the MDGs particularly the Education for All (EFA) goals.

The Fourth Sustainable Development Goal on Education (SDG 4) calls to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Access to appropriate learning materials is listed as a key strategy for achieving the first means of implementation (4a) under SDG4 related to providing inclusive and effective learning environments for all.

Educational materials are recognized as core for the new Sustainable Development Goal on education. The amount a country spends on learning materials is a good indicator of its commitment to providing a quality education for all. While there are various types of teaching and learning materials, this report will focus on educational materials donated to blind students in Somalia, which are the most commonly used type, such as Braille boards, stylus, white braille papers, hand bags, white cane stick, and school uniforms, which are essential tools for the students to improving learning outcomes in the school this year.
